Speech and Language Assessment
- What Is a Speech and Language Assessment?
- A speech and language assessment offers a detailed picture of your child’s communication abilities. We explore how your child listens, understands, speaks, and interacts all through age-appropriate, play-based activities and structured testing. The assessment is always tailored to your child’s age, developmental level, and unique needs.
- Your assessment may include:
- - A discussion with you about your child’s developmental history and current concerns
- - Observations of your child playing and interacting with both familiar people (like you) and new people (like the clinician)
- - Standardised tools that measure speech, language, social skills, and play development
- - A review of any additional factors such as cognition, motor skills, vision, and hearing
- What We Assess
- We look at key areas of communication that may include:
- - Speech sounds – How clearly your child pronounces words
- - Understanding of language – Can they follow directions or understand questions?
- - Use of language – Are they using enough words or combining them effectively?
- - Social skills – Do they initiate conversation, make eye contact, or engage in back-and-forth play?
- - Stuttering/fluency – Are they able to get their words out smoothly?
- - Voice – Is their voice clear, too soft, or strained?
- Speech Sound Assessment
- Speech sounds are learned over time, and some errors are typical in early development. We help determine whether your child’s sound patterns are age-appropriate or if they may benefit from therapy.
- - Under 3 years: We observe your child during play and natural conversation to see how they use sounds in everyday situations.
- - 3 years and over: We may use structured assessments where your child names pictures, repeats words, or copies simple mouth movements. These tasks help us assess clarity of speech and how the muscles of the mouth are working.
- Language Assessment
- Language is more than just words it’s the ability to understand, express, and connect. Early years are crucial for developing these foundational skills.
- - Under 3 years: Through play, songs, and simple routines, we observe how your child communicates. We consider vocabulary, word combinations, and how they express their needs. Your insights are key, especially if your child is shy around new people.
- - 3 years and over: We use fun, interactive tests to explore your child’s vocabulary, sentence building, comprehension, and storytelling skills. This helps us understand how well your child can express themselves and follow instructions at their expected developmental level.
