What does an Occupational Therapist (OT) do and does my child need OT?

Our warm and friendly occupational therapists have experience in providing a wide range of services to many different children at different stages of development.
Occupational Therapy for children includes working with children from birth to age 18 to develop skills, confidence and independence to do the things that they want and need to do to live healthy, fulfilling lives. An occupational therapist works with children with a range of diagnosis including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD); mental health concerns such as anxiety and trauma; Global developmental Delay (GDD); Intellectual Impairment (II), sensory regulation difficulties (Sensory Processing Disorder), developmental disorders such as Dyspraxia and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), genetic conditions such as Down's Syndrome, neurological conditions such as Stroke and various other conditions.
Common Difficulties that OT's can help with
- delayed developmental milestones;
- difficulties with emotional regulation;
- difficulties with playing with other children;
- difficulties with developing their play skills;
- difficulties with social skills and making friends;
- challenges with paying attention, concentrating and following instructions;
- fine motor difficulties (handwriting, shoelaces, buttons, zips);
- difficulties with self care skills (toilet training, sleeping, eating, dressing, showering);
- difficulties with whole body movements (ball skills, balancing, strength, coordination, hand-eye coordination);
- anxiety (separation anxiety, social anxiety, general anxiety) and low confidence.
