About the Package
Non-Verbal Cognitive Ability Assessment
The Non-Verbal Cognitive Ability Assessment package would be recommended for children and young people who require a cognitive ability assessment and have speech, language and communication difficulties; are English language learners, or are individuals from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander. The Non-Verbal Cognitive Ability Assessment would also be suitable for hard of hearing or individuals that are deaf; gifted individuals from a culturally and linguistically diverse population; or individuals with diagnosed communication disorders such as Aphasia, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Selective Mutism.
The Brilliant Minds Non-Verbal Cognitive Ability Assessment includes a cognitive assessment and assessment of adaptive functioning. The primary cognitive assessment utilised is the Wechsler Nonverbal Scale of Ability (WNV). The WNV Scale is a reliable and efficient scale to accurately assess cognitive ability “when language poses a barrier to typical administration, or where traditional intellectual assessment results would be questionable due to language-related difficulties (Pearson, 2022). The WNV scale assesses children and young people up to the age of 21 years, 11 months. The Test of Non-Verbal Intelligence- Fourth Edition (TONI-4) will be utilised as an additional tool to provide supplementary assessment information where required.
A series of questionnaires will be sent to parents/ guardians and teachers, to gain the required additional information.

The Assessment Breakdown/How It Works
Session 1: Parent/Guardian Intake Session
1 Hour Session
Information gathering session.
No children are to attend the intake session
This can be conducted in clinic or via telehealth
Session 2: Child Session 1
2 Hour Session
Cognitive Assessment with Child – Wechsler Non-Verbal Scale of Ability (WNV) and/or TONI-4
Must be Conducted On Clinic Premises
Session 3: Parent/Guardian Feedback Session
1 Hour SessionIn Clinic or via Telehealth2-3 weeks from assessment date
Comprehensive Report
A written report is provided as part of this package. Please note that there is a two to three week turn around for report writing.
How Is The Assessment Scheduled?
We typically schedule the assessment to occur in a single day. In the single-day format, the parent intake session and child testing are conducted on the same day.
Cost
$3390
This assessment is based on 12 hours of clinical time.
A $550 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking.
This assessment is not covered by Medicare. If you have private health insurance, please contact your provider to see how much they can cover for you.
The private health code for assessment is 100.
Note About Teacher QuestionnairesBrilliant Minds Psychology provides hard copy teacher questionnaires as part of your child’s assessment package, in accordance with Queensland Education Department policies. The preparation, handling, and tracked express postage of these questionnaires are all included in your assessment fee. We will notify both you and your child’s teacher via email once the questionnaires have been sent.
Please note: We kindly request that completed teacher questionnaires be returned at least one week prior to your child’s assessment. Questionnaires received after the assessment date may not be able to be included in the final report.
