The assessment breakdown/how it works
We know that booking an assessment for your child can feel like a big step. Our goal is to make the process simple, supportive, and stress-free, so you know exactly what to expect along the way. Below is a simple outline of what happens at each stage:
Session 1: Parent / Guardian Intake Session (1 Hour)
- This first session is just for parents or caregivers - children don’t attend.
- We’ll take the time to get to know your child by talking about their history, development, strengths, and any concerns you’ve noticed at home or school.
- You can choose to have this session in person at our clinic or via telehealth.
- This conversation helps us understand your child’s background so we can tailor the assessment specifically to their needs.
SESSION 2: CHILD SESSION 1 - COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT (2 Hours)
- This is your child’s special time with the clinician, where we explore how they think, learn, and solve problems all without relying on words.
- We use: Wechsler Non-Verbal Scale of Ability (WNV) - designed for children who communicate better through pictures, patterns, and problem-solving rather than language. They help us discover your child’s true potential and learning style, even if speech or language is a challenge.
- This session is always done in person at the clinic, in a calm and supportive setting.
session 3: parent/guardian feedback session (1 HOUR)
- Around 2-3 weeks after testing, we’ll meet with you to go through your child’s results and what they mean.
- You’ll receive a comprehensive report that explains your child’s learning strengths and areas that may need extra support along with clear, practical recommendations for school and home
- This session can be done in clinic or via telehealth.

What to Expect When Booking an Assessment
We understand that organising an assessment for your child can feel like a big step. Our friendly admin team is here to make the process smooth and stress-free from your very first call.
when you call to book
- When you first contact us, our team will have a brief chat to understand your child’s needs and confirm the most suitable assessment package. You’ll then be asked to complete two short forms: (1) Screener Form - helps us confirm that the assessment you’re requesting is the right fit for your child’s needs (2) Assessment Consent and Deposit Agreement - outlines the process, cost, and booking details.
- Once both forms are returned, we’ll contact you with available assessment dates. When you’ve chosen a date that suits you, we’ll take your $550 non-refundable deposit over the phone to secure the booking (Please note: bookings cannot be held without a deposit.)
WHEN YOU ARE BOOKED
After payment, you’ll receive a confirmation email with:
- Your assessment date and times
- The clinician’s name and clinic details
- A breakdown of what to expect on the day
- Access to your Brilliant Minds assessment forms and online standardised questionnaires - to be completed one week before your appointment
These forms allow our clinicians to review your child’s background information ahead of time so that your intake and assessment sessions are as effective and personalised as possible.
not sure which assessment to book?
- If you’re uncertain about which assessment best fits your child’s needs, we offer Assessment Consultations with our regular assessment Psychologists.
- This is a short 50 minute, standalone appointment where a psychologist discusses your concerns and recommends the most appropriate assessment pathway.
- The consultation has a separate fee to the overall assessment cost, but in some cases, we may be able to credit part of this cost towards your full assessment if you proceed with booking.
teacher questionnaires
Brilliant Minds Psychology provides hard copy teacher questionnaires as part of your child’s assessment package, in line with Queensland Education Department policies. Preparation of the hard copy questionnaires, handling and postage, including tracking, is included in your assessment fee. We will email you and your child’s teacher to let them know the questionnaires are on its way.
Please note: We kindly request that completed teacher questionnaires be returned at least one week prior to your child’s assessment. Questionnaires received after the date of the assessment may not be able to be included in the final report.
