giftedness assessment
From 6 Years of Age
about package 4
“A Gifted child is one who performs or who has the ability to perform at a level significantly beyond his or her chronologically aged peers and whose unique abilities and characteristics require special provisions and social and emotional support from the family, community and educational context”. Harrison, C. (2003).
Every child learns and grows in their own unique way. Some children show signs of advanced thinking, creativity, or problem-solving skills that go well beyond what’s typical for their age these children may be gifted. Our Intellectual Assessment for Giftedness helps identify whether your child’s abilities fall within the gifted range and provides clear guidance on how to best support their learning and wellbeing at home and at school.
This assessment can be especially helpful if your child:
- Learns new information very quickly or shows strong curiosity
- Becomes easily bored or frustrated in class
- Has big ideas but struggles with focus or motivation
- Feels misunderstood, anxious, or perfectionistic
- Excels in some areas but finds others surprisingly hard
Giftedness can sometimes come with challenges. Children may underachieve, feel disconnected from peers, or experience emotional ups and downs. This assessment helps you understand both your child’s strengths and their areas of need, so you can nurture their potential in a balanced way.
as a part of this package:

The assessment breakdown/how it works
We know that booking an assessment for your child can feel like a big step. Our goal is to make the process simple, supportive, and stress-free, so you know exactly what to expect along the way.
Session 1: Parent / Guardian Intake Session (1 Hour)
- This first session is just for parents or caregivers - we ask children do not attend.
- We’ll spend time talking about your child’s development, learning style, and what has prompted you to seek an assessment.
- You can choose to do this session in person at the clinic or via telehealth.
SESSION 2: CHILD SESSION 1 - COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT (2 Hours)
- In this session, we explore how your child thinks and solves problems using age-appropriate tasks from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Fifth Edition (WISC-V)
- This helps us understand their intellectual strengths, reasoning skills, and learning potential.
- This session takes place in our clinic, where our clinicians ensure the experience is fun, comfortable, and engaging.
session 3: child session 2 - academic assessment (3 hours)
- We assess your child’s academic abilities including reading, writing, spelling, and maths using the WIAT-III.
- This helps us see how your child applies their thinking skills in a school-like setting and where they may need more challenge or support.
- This session is also conducted in the clinic and includes breaks to keep your child comfortable.
session 4: parent/guardian feedback session (1 HOUR)
- Once the assessment is complete, we meet with you to go through the results, explain what they mean, and provide clear, practical recommendations to support your child at home and school.
- This can be held in person or via telehealth, usually 2–3 weeks after testing.

What to Expect When Booking an Assessment
We understand that organising an assessment for your child can feel like a big step. Our friendly admin team is here to make the process smooth and stress-free from your very first call.
when you call to book
- When you first contact us, our team will have a brief chat to understand your child’s needs and confirm the most suitable assessment package. You’ll then be asked to complete two short forms: (1) Screener Form - helps us confirm that the assessment you’re requesting is the right fit for your child’s needs (2) Assessment Consent and Deposit Agreement - outlines the process, cost, and booking details.
- Once both forms are returned, we’ll contact you with available assessment dates. When you’ve chosen a date that suits you, we’ll take your $550 deposit over the phone to secure the booking (Please note: bookings cannot be held without a deposit.)
WHEN YOU ARE BOOKED
After payment, you’ll receive a confirmation email with:
- Your assessment date and times
- The clinician’s name and clinic details
- A breakdown of what to expect on the day
- Access to your Brilliant Minds assessment forms and online standardised questionnaires - to be completed one week before your appointment
These forms allow our clinicians to review your child’s background information ahead of time so that your intake and assessment sessions are as effective and personalised as possible.
not sure which assessment to book?
- If you’re uncertain about which assessment best fits your child’s needs, we offer Assessment Consultations with our regular assessment Psychologists.
- This is a short 50 minute, standalone appointment where a psychologist discusses your concerns and recommends the most appropriate assessment pathway.
- The consultation has a separate fee to the overall assessment cost, but in some cases, we may be able to credit part of this cost towards your full assessment if you proceed with booking.
teacher questionnaires
Brilliant Minds Psychology provides hard copy teacher questionnaires as part of your child’s assessment package, in line with Queensland Education Department policies. Preparation of the hard copy questionnaires, handling and postage, including tracking, is included in your assessment fee. We will email you and your child’s teacher to let them know the questionnaires are on its way.
Please note: We kindly request that completed teacher questionnaires be returned at least one week prior to your child’s assessment. Questionnaires received after the date of the assessment may not be able to be included in the final report.
