Do I need a referral to see a Psychologist?

You do not need a referral to see a psychologist.  However if you wish to claim a rebate from Medicare than a Mental Heal Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP or a letter from your psychiatrist or paediatrician is required. See our Fee page for more information.

Who is eligible for a Medicare rebate?

In order to obtain a rebate from Medicare, your General Practitioner or Psychiatrist must assess you as eligible to receive a Mental Health Care Plan following which you can be referred to a psychologist. You will be able to obtain a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year, after the first 6 sessions a review is then conducted to determine if 4 more sessions are needed.

What should I expect when I see a psychologist?

Before your first therapy session you are often sent a number of psychological questionnaires to establish a starting point from which our psychologists can work to gain areas of difficulty and strengths.

The First Appointment

The first appointment will usually take 60 minutes and during this time your psychologist will ask about the problems identified as well as other questions related to your past history.  During the first session we aim to understand your difficulties /concerns and discuss your treatment expectations and goals.  If you have relevant reports you should bring a photocopy of these to the appointment.

A full assessment usually takes two to three sessions, once an assessment is completed, the treatment plan and goals can be discussed.

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

Clinical psychologists specialise in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of mental disorders. Clinical psychologists need to complete a postgraduate degree in clinical psychology from a recognised university before calling themselves a clinical psychologist. In Australia, it takes 8 years to become a clinical psychologist,  this includes at least 6 years of university study.
